So, what's the attraction? I think it's because I always associate aprons with my Grandmother and Mama. Both loved to cook, plus my grandmother dressed up every day. So she always wore the big coverall kind. I have trouble seeing her in my mind without an apron LOL. Just about the only time she didn't have one on was when she went somewhere.Mama always used the half apron type, but one was always on the ready, hanging from the towel rack. I'm hoping, when the time comes, that I'm going to find some of Mama's stuck back somewhere, but I don't really expect to find any. Mama was not a keeper - she was a neat freak, so when she got older and didn't cook fancy any more, she probably used them as rags and got rid of them.
When they're all ironed up and laid out for picture taking to add to my descriptions on eBay, they make quite a display of domesticity, and they always carry me back to Grandmother's and Mama's kitchens, and big hugs that buried my face in their sun scented cotton aprons.

These certainly qualify as retro! We sold a Vera one not long ago, but I couldn't find the picture.
It's funny that you are talking about aprons. I got out one of my grandmother's aprons the other day, because I was tired of getting splatters on my clothes. I wonder why people don't wear aprons anymore. I think they're a good idea!
These old aprons can sell for quite a bit to the right collector. You might want to consider putting grandma's aprons away and buying yourself a new one, Sharon Lynne!!
Aprons make perfect sense, so I don't know why people stopped using them, unless it is the whole "barefoot and pregnant", Mrs. Cleaver image of wives that the Women's Movement came out against. For awhile there it just wasn't cool to be a SAHM!!
I always wear an apron if I'm cooking and can't understand why so few people wear them nowadays. Women's libbers have a lot to answer for! Great post Rosemary
ohhh, Aprons! They have become fashionable again...my mother-in-law can't keep up with the demand for her aprons that she sews and sells at a local co-operative.

As others have mentioned, aprons are big again. Just goes to show you that if you keep something long enough it will come back into style. But who the devil has enough space?

Knowing what to save and what to get rid of, Sheila, is a study in crystal ball viewing in some cases. Other times, it's pretty obvious what will grow in value. Our Star Wars figures were bought on close-out, with the express purpose of putting them up for 20 or 30 years. And that's exactly what we did, and they are now in the hands of some very happy collectors, who paid us a very nice price for them.
i like half aprons. in my native country they are the ones mostly used..in Nicaragua, since they are often used by the venders, i have memories in my head of huge pockets on the front of them..money and stuff they carry..
i hardly ever see any pics of them around anymore and certainly never have seen one as a choice for purchase..
i like them too. for me too, it's a comfort thing for it reminds me of my childhood..and i don't cook so i don't wear any aprons but i wouldn't mind wearing a half one but the odd time i actually do something..

My kids got me an apron as a gag gift at a thrift shop some time ago. I usually wear old jeans, shorts and t-shirts when I'm cooking so I haven't used it much since it is nicer than my clothes. :>)

Oops, sorry about that, Jan. I answered your comment in with Chana's. It's not cooking I need to protect my terribly expensive out of date clothes from - DH cooks. It's the eating that I need protection from. I'm messy.
There are those things that transcend time, that take us to another place, that connect us to someone. It appears the apron strings are what ties that all together for you.

Never liked aprons as they reminded me of those poor 50's housewives but I really do need to buy one as cooking stir frys often I always get things popping and splashing all over my tops.
Jackie, there are so many creative styles in aprons nowadays, I'm sure you can find something that would be the antithesis of Mrs. Cleaver!! I don't cook, so I don't need one. My hubby could use one, though ;)
Does that brain of yours ever take a break, Kilroy?? I can't commit to anything right now, but I'll help if I'm able.
